The Una and The Lion, a £5 gold coin struck in 1839 to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. It is widely regarded as the most beautiful of all British coinage and depicts the Queen, as Lady Una from Edmund Spenser’s epic poem ‘The Faerie Queene’, symbolically leading the British Lion. The Latin phrase above the figures reads Dirige Deus Gressus Meos - “May the Lord Direct my Steps”.
